How CBD and Hemp Oil Can Help with Your Chronic Pain

Living with chronic pain is something that changes everything about your life. It can interfere with how you plan your day, what activities you participate in, where you can go and even how you interact with your family members. And even though it may feel very lonely at times, know this: you’re not alone.

According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, over 100 million people across the U.S. suffer from widespread chronic pain. For many, this pain has no definitive source, making it even more difficult to diagnose and treat.

Painkillers and pharmaceutical solutions, even when FDA-approved, aren’t always the best way to treat chronic pain, and scientists have long been looking for new and effective sources of relief. And now, they may have found it, in the form of CBD and hemp oil. The widespread acceptance of cannabis and its byproducts for viable medical treatments has further led to new research into the use of CBD to treat chronic pain —with promising results.

The science behind CBD and hemp oil

As we said earlier, cannabinoids work differently than other analgesics. In a study released by the Journal of Experimental Medicine, researchers wrote:

“We report that systemic and intrathecal administration of cannabidiol (CBD), a major nonpsychoactive component of marijuana, and its modified derivatives significantly suppress chronic inflammatory and neuropathic pain without causing apparent analgesic tolerance in rodents.”

In lay terms, this means that CBD worked to reduce inflammation and block pain during their clinical trials, and didn’t show any signs of causing the rodents to build up a tolerance to it. CBD plugs into a different set of receptors that produce the side effects that fight pain and inflammation. It does all this without the notorious “high” we associate with marijuana.

Conversely, when opioid painkillers work, they plug into opioid receptors in the brain. This causes a flood of “feel-good” chemicals that induce euphoria and block pain. This is responsible for the major risk of addiction that has fueled the opioid epidemic.

THC (the illegal part of cannabis) plugs into another set of receptors, and it is this reaction that is responsible for its psychoactive effects. So, in short, CBD and hemp oil offer all of the benefits of marijuana/cannabis use with none of the illegal or undesirable side effects.

Scientists agree that they’ll need more information to discern all of the potential benefits of using CBD products. But these are just some of the conditions that have already demonstrated a favorable response:

  • Epilepsy
  • Arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Migraines
  • Some autoimmune-related pain
  • Social anxiety
  • Depression

While not all of those ailments are directly related to physical pain, many of them can contribute or result from being in pain all the time. For example, waking up every day and hurting can lead to severe depression and isolation, which can give way to social anxiety.

Pain relief lifts a huge weight off of a person’s life. They can wake up and look forward to doing those mundane things that the rest of us take for granted. CBD works differently for everyone, but there’s enough scientifically backed evidence to prove that it can help improve the quality of life for those suffering from chronic pain.

Treating pain is never an exact science

Pain is something that’s relative to each individual person. Because of this, chronic pain requires a very personal treatment plan based on medical condition, symptoms, severity and other mitigating factors.

Multiple studies completed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information have shown cannabinoid products to be effective in the treatment of pain and inflammation. These aren’t just sponsored studies done to promote products—these are genuine, double-blind medical experiments that have followed the results of CBD usage for pain over several years.

Compared to a placebo, CBD and hemp oil have proven themselves usable alternatives for treating chronic pain; especially when traditional pharmaceuticals aren’t working. This is huge news for people who have been stuck taking powerful narcotic painkillers for a prolonged period of time; eventually, the body builds up a tolerance to narcotics, but cannabinoids don’t have this issue. They fill different receptors in the body and reduce pain differently than traditional painkillers.

Different types of pain require different applications

CBD products come in both topical and edible forms. And, of course, different types of pain will require differing dosages and methods of application.

Arthritis

Experts recommend using a topical gel that stays in place and allows the CBD to sink into the affected area. This targets the medication and its anti-inflammatory effects.

For widespread arthritis related to autoimmune disorders, the immune system may respond better when sufferers ingest a certain amount each day.

Multiple sclerosis (MS)

Studies have shown that an oral spray (one that coats the inside of the mouth) is the best way to use CBD for the treatment of severe pain related to MS. The mouth and cheeks are actually two of the best ways to allow your body to quickly absorb certain medications, quickly introducing them to your bloodstream and helping them to start working on your nervous system. When you’re in pain, you definitely don’t want to wait!

Fibromyalgia

Widespread chronic pain often requires a daily maintenance dose of CBD. The best way to control the dosage and to make sure that you’re getting the full benefit is to take it daily, either in pill form or mixed in a tincture.

Then, it’s possible to use additional topical creams or gels on areas that are particularly problematic. It’s always important to know how much CBD you’re ingesting; talking to a physician or a qualified CBD retailer can help you decide on a dosing schedule.

Generalized pain

Many people suffer from pain that may be neurological, related to cancer, or the result of an old injury. Again, depending on the severity of the symptoms, CBD products can be used both internally and externally on targeted areas. It’s really a matter of finding a combination that works for you and adjusting it based on your comfort levels.

Taking back control

CBD and hemp oil are shaking off the stigma that used to come with cannabis products. There’s no reason to accept a life lived in constant discomfort. CBD can help you take your life back.

  1. I like how you said that CBD and help oil are making progress to reject the old stigma that used to accompany cannabis products. I have arthritis and have heard that CBD oil might be able to help, but I’ve been hesitant to try it because of cannabis’ reputation. Thanks for encouraging me to take back control and shake off the old stigma.

Amazing story! Thank you for sharing Amy 🙂

  2. I never knew that CBD creams are best for arthritis because they can stick in place and be absorbed into the affected area. That is really good to know because my grandmother has horrible arthritis in her hands and feet. I’m looking for a natural method that could help her since she likes natural health solutions, and I think CBD cream could be really helpful for her so that she’s not always in pain.

It depends on the quality of the oil and the dosage for the individual which one has to find on their own.
