CBD Medication & Its Role in Assisting Cognitive Disabilities
Although it’s been historically branded as detrimental to overall brain function and long-term mental acuity, medical science is turning to cannabis to treat a widening range of cognitive and neurological issues. Recent breakthroughs in medical research have been able to isolate the psychoactive compound in cannabis (namely tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC) from the bioactive compound cannabidiol, popularly known as CBD. This development has revolutionized modern medicine. Today, CBD is used to ameliorate symptoms of serious medical conditions considered virtually untreatable as recently as a decade ago.
So what exactly is CBD, in a nutshell?
CBD is one of the two primary compounds in cannabis. Since 2011, it has gained tremendous popularity among medical professionals and researchers alike due to its various medicinal and therapeutic benefits. CBD is used in isolates, tinctures and topicals to reduce symptoms of anything from serious illness in adults to learning disabilities in children – affecting anything from their writing to their overall academic performance.
Citing Study: Examples of Cognitive Disorders Improved by CBD
Cannabidiol has several properties considered valuable in the field of medicine. In proper dosages, CBD provides a number of potent effects – the most well known of which are listed below in no particular order
- Anti-Inflammatory helps to reduce and control inflammation from irritation or infection
- Anxiolytic and Antipsychotic has been shown to reduce feelings of stress, anxiety and even depression
- Anti-Tumoral helps to inhibit the growth or spread of cancerous cells and tissue
- Antiemetic reduces the effects and discomfort associated with nausea or vomiting
- Anticonvulsant significantly alleviates neurological symptoms of diseases such as Parkinson’s and Dravet syndrome
These days, CBD is regularly prescribed for children and adults with learning disabilities like ADHD, epilepsy and even short-term memory loss. A 2017 study exploring the viability of CBD for treating cognitive issues found that regular dosing saw both immediate and long-term improvements in recognition, working memory and overall mental acuity.
Another study conducted in 2014 showed the beneficial effects of CBD medication on mice in latter stages of neurodegeneration. The results showed that mice receiving CBD performed better in learning tests. Computer brain imaging samples also showed less degeneration specifically in the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain responsible for memory and spatial awareness.
The Case for CBD Medication Among the Cognitively Impaired
Currently, there is extensive research being conducted on CBD’s possible neuroprotective benefits. Previous studies have indicated its role in aiding normal cellular function and repair, as well as promoting healthy aging via mitochondrial support.
Time will tell just how much CBD can help our society with learning disabilities and cognitive impairments. For now, it’s encouraging to see its role in treating a wide variety of illnesses we’d previously assumed were beyond the capabilities of medical science.
